Staying current on your BI skillset

The market is ever changing and you look around only to find that you are now working on yesterdays technology.   What do you do and how do you stay current.  Where is the industry going with Big Data.   What new reporting tools are the hottest?  Besides that, what is the industry using?   I want to share a couple of tips that I have tried to embrace.    The first tip is to stay current with articles and blogs.  One of the great sites that I have found is Project Botticelli.   https://projectbotticelli.com/  Super site for video training and also some great BI content.   The next site which all of us should be using anyway is linkedin or www.linkedin.com.   Not only can you stay current with where your former coworkers are now but what are they using as far as tools.   Also look at indeed.com   Indeed shares job openings by companies.  From there you can get an idea of what tools employers are demanding from the industry.

There is no excuse today to not know how to do something.   All kinds of training content are available out there.   Check out http://www.lynda.com/ to learn how to pick up on new skills.   Also you can grab videos on the vendors sites.  I know I have downloaded tableau just to try it out for free.   This is where the education community has fallen behind the times.  A college course will not tell you what is fresh in the industry.  Especially our industry.   It is crucial to keep plugged in.  Check out youtube videos as well.

Some of these sites require a monthly fee.  If you choose to go that route then don't forget to note that on your taxes for a tax deduction.   Best of luck to you

Joe
